Vasyl Iosypovych Pilka was born on May, 4, 1959 in the Polyana village (theTranscarpathian region, Ukraine) in a family of workers. The family moved to the city of Kryvyi Rih in the 60-s. Vasyl received the complete secondary education already in Kryvyi Rih. Vasyl often visited his parental village in the period of these years. The young man spent much time among the unique landscapes of the Motherland. The communication with the masters of furniture-making, among whom there were many relatives, affected Vasyl’s acquiring of the sense of beauty, the ability to understand the material, you are working with. Vasyl has worked for some time at the Kryvyi Rih Locomotive Repairing Plant after the training’s end and the service in the Armed Forces of the USSR (1978-1980). The work with the gigantic diesel engines required a great responsibility. The ability to wake up a great, strong and obedient mechanical beast in the piece of metal - is a real miracle in itself! Thus, the future master gained the invaluable experience in mechanics. Vasyl Pilka linked his fate with the profession of a metallurgist in the period of 1984-2004.
The work at the very metallurgical combine permitted completely to be a part of something great – the great affair, the great collective, the great result. Vasyl mastered the profession of the steel-maker’s assistant and later on he became the steel-maker himself. He was actively engaged in practical physics and chemistry of metal at that time. He studied to "breathe and listen to the metal", as the steel-makers say. The professional age of the metallurgist is bright, but not long. The aggressive environment of the steel-smelting shop, the high traumatism, the lost health – it’s not the full price, paid for the right to master the mysteries of metal. Vasyl Iosypovych paid this price with surplus. After the hard and long rehabilitation, the new period of searching himself has begun. At that time Vasyl communicated with the people of different professions and social status. As if all the Motherland appeared in the persons of these people of labour! Their opinions of life, the thoughts of the past and future, the present-day’s estimation and the place of an individual in it - all of this had the great influence on the formation of Vasyl’s new world outlook. His was troubled by the problems of philosophy and the self-identification, being projected at the fate of their own country, at their place in the history of the mother-Ukraine’s formation. The soul of Vasyl had no peace, was not ready to rest. How to satisfy the creativeness thurst of the glorious son of the Ukrainian masters and steel-makers? The response came from the same unexpected side. Glass. This is the new element, which engrossed him completely.
